Dataset Description (Abstract): Three small datasets were used in the manuscript "Quantifying rhizosphere priming effects on soil organic matter decomposition in situ in a subarctic ecotone using natural abundance radiocarbon". The goal of the project was to ascertain if we could measure priming in situ (i.e. using root ingrowth or exclusion soil cores and girdling). Measurements of radiocarbon content from CO2 collections and DOC, CO2 efflux, DOC concentration, root biomass in the cores, soil temperature and soil moisture were conducted at the end of July 2021 in Abisko, Northern Sweden as part of a NERC UKRI funded project. Rmarkdown code is included to demonstrate the analysis.
Dataset Description (TOC): There are three datasets followed by an Rmarkdown file for analysis. For the small dataset 'PRIMETIME_IngrowthCores_long2.csv', measurements of 13CO2 collected from molecular sieve cartridges (d13CO2-VPDB), radiocarbon in %modern (14CO2), corrected radiocarbon in %modern (stdcorrected_14CO2), size of mesh in soil core (Mesh), the plot (Plot; B = Birch, 1-6 = replicate/site, C = Control or G = Girdled), the type of flux could be Heterotrophic or Root-Ingrowth (Type), willow or birch vegetation (Vegetation), whether the treatment was girdled or control (Treatment), CO2 efflux from soil cores in umol m-2 s-1 (Flux), root biomass in grams (root_biomass_g), CO2 volume in ml collected from the molecular sieve cartridges (CO2_vol_ml), Soil temperature inside the cores (Tsoil_in) and outside the cores (Tsoil_out) and soil moisture inside the cores (Mv_in) and outside the cores (Mv_out) at the time of sampling were conducted at the end of July 2021 in Abisko, Northern Sweden. For 'PRIMETIME_IngrowthCores_DO14C_long.csv' many of the same columns apply except (DOC_Conc) represents mg/L of DOC, (DO14C) is the radiocarbon content of the DOC and the filterer initials for root exclusion cores (H_filterer) and Root ingrowth cores (R_filterer) are also included. The spreadsheet 'PRIMETIME_IngrowthCores2.csv' is also included but is just a wide format of 'PRIMETIME_IngrowthCores_long2.csv' with (H14C) representing the corrected 14CO2 values from root exclusion cores and (R14C) from root ingrowth cores in %modern. (Hflux) is the heterotrophic flux from root exclusion cores and (Rflux) is the flux from root-ingrowth cores. An annotated file for the analysis in Rmarkdown is provided.
